Rotator Cuff Tears

• Rotator cuff tears (RCT) are the single most-common reason for shoulder pain

• Every year, over two million people in the United States are diagnosed with a RCT

• Approximately one-in-four adults over the age of 50 suffer from a RCT

Massive Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tears

• Massive irreparable rotator cuff tears (MIRCT) involve two or more of the rotator cuff tendons or is greater than five centimetres in size

• Estimates suggest that almost 40% of all rotator cuff tears are massive in nature — equivalent to nearly 10% of the population over the age of 50

• Current treatment options, such as superior capsular reconstruction and reverse shoulder arthroplasty, are limited and have high failure rates

• Individuals with MIRCTs can suffer from a loss in range of motion, decreased shoulder strength and function, chronic pain and sleep disturbance — leading to time off work, loss of wages and reduced activity
